The evening I got caught in a dangerous flash flood, I called on Persephone to get me through it.

Calling Persephone: Flash Flood

Just An Ordinary Evening

It was an ordinary evening in July 2025. I live in southern Arizona, very close to the border, and it was monsoon season. I do a lot of gig work in addition to my regular income as a freelance writer. At the time, I was doing some DoorDash and got one more order. The tip was generous, and they weren’t that far from me. I also thought I would have enough time before the rain started coming down. I was wrong, and dangerously so.

It was a McDonald’s order, and everything went smoothly at first. I got the food and started down the road to their ranch. The wind started getting really fierce, and before I knew it, the rain was coming down so hard and kind of sideways. I couldn’t even see an inch in front of me, much less a foot. Right then, I got a call from my husband, urging me to turn around and come home. Through the pounding rain and howling wind, I couldn’t hear him and just hung up, frustrated.

I finally did get to the ranch, and by then, the rain had died down. So much so that I thought I could just speed home. I started on my way and noticed the customer had left me an extra tip for my effort. LOL!

False Lights & Monsoon Mayhem

About halfway home, the rain started pounding again. I could see a sign on the road, which I couldn’t read because of all the rain and wind. Later, I realized it was a canal sign… I should have pulled over. Instead, I kept going and saw what I thought were brake lights ahead of me. I figured I would just follow those two red lights. However, I would later realize they weren’t taillights at all. I’m not sure what I was seeing, but it couldn’t have been a car!

As I was trying to follow the taillights, the car stopped moving. I was stuck and didn’t know what was happening. Keep in mind that it was still flooding and so windy, and I couldn’t really see anything. I assumed the car had stalled and opened the door to get out, only to have water start pouring in. I knew I had to get out, the last thing you want is to drown in a closed car. So I put my feet out of the car, and they got stuck in the mud. I kept trying to lift my feet to walk, but I really couldn’t because of all the mud. I really started panicking and started wailing and sobbing right there in the flooded darkness.

Goddess Support Line

I screamed out for God to help. No answer as usual. So, then, I called out to the Goddesses — entities I hadn’t spoken with for decades, and they answered immediately.

I saw a goddess in front of me (not actually in front of me, but in my mind’s eye), standing what seemed to be on top of the flooded road, if that makes any sense. Her mouth was closed, and she was in front of me, but somehow I heard her voice right next to my right ear. I asked her name, and she whispered, “Persephone. Don’t be afraid. You need to stay calm and LOOK around you.”

Now, before y’all start making fun of me for seeing goddesses, Christians see “angels” and “God” all the time. If they can talk about their experiences, then so can I.

Ambushing FedEx

I took a few deep breaths and looked, and saw a FedEx truck. The driver was looking at me, but wasn’t coming to help. He seemed so far away, and I wondered why he wasn’t on the road. I started to slosh and make my way painfully through the mud to get to his truck. I hopped in and told him to get me outta there. He looked more stunned than anything and said, “What about your car?” I replied, “Who cares about the damn car? Just get me the F out of here!”

The FedEx driver dropped me off at the closest Circle K, then I hitched a ride with another guy from there until I got home. I was drenched and the second guy was kinda creepy, but whatever. That night, my husband tried to call a tow truck to get the car, but they all refused because of the flooding. They all said to wait until morning.

Persephone’s Patience

My husband couldn’t wait til morning, though. His mother wouldn’t let him use her car in that weather. The tow trucks we called wouldn’t go out in that flooding, either. So, he walked. Yes, he walked all the way there in a freaking flood!

When he returned, his face was white. He said I wasn’t anywhere near the road; I had driven into the middle of a freaking canal on some farmer’s land! He also mentioned how high the water was, and then it made sense why I got stuck in the mud. He said there was no way I should have made it out of there alive.

That was the night that I realized the Goddesses have always been there for me. It was such a life-changing moment, but it was one of the factors that led me back to honoring my heritage and faith.

When I was in trouble and was screaming for help, only one voice answered: Persephone. And I will forever be grateful to her for that. I don’t know why she answered and helped at that time, but she did.
